Distinguished Fellowship Programs Information
Set yourself apart as one of the country’s most promising young minds through the Maryville University Distinguished Fellowships Program. This program is designed to help our most talented students compete for distinguished fellowships, such as the Truman, Goldwater, Udall, and Rhodes Scholarships. Distinguished Fellowship nominees from Maryville are talented, independent, and diverse. Winning one of these awards takes you to graduate study at world-renowned academic institutions where you will have the opportunity to enhance not only your intellectual ability but also to achieve personal growth.
Colleges and universities are invited to nominate students for many of these highly competitive, merit-based awards for graduate study at campuses around the world. The caliber of Maryville students in the past and the quality of the undergraduate education you receive here is recognized throughout the Midwest and the nation. This program has been developed to identify Maryville students that are strong candidates and assist them in competing for these national awards. Students receive help from faculty members during the application process, so you will be well prepared to compete. Below is basic information about several of the most popular programs. Awards for Post-Graduate Study/Research
Rhodes Scholarships
This award covers tuition and fees at the University of Oxford for 2-3 years of graduate study, plus a stipend for living expenses. Awardees pursue graduate study (masters and doctoral degrees) at the University of Oxford in any discipline. Scholars may not apply for the MBA in the first year, but after completing a different (one-year) master’s degree, they are allowed to pursue a one-year MBA degree. This award also covers the costs of travel to and from Oxford. Students apply through one of the 50 states (either home state or where they attend college).
What Type of Student Qualifies?
The best 1% of students overall. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18-24 years old, and seniors or recent graduates at the time of Maryville University nomination. All majors are eligible. Applicants must show demonstrated success in athletics (broadly defined).

Marshall Scholarships
The Marshall Scholarship is an award funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for one or two years of graduate study in the United Kingdom to distinguished young Americans who will become leaders, opinion formers and decision makers in their own country. This award covers travel, tuition, books, and other expenses for graduate study at a university in the UK.
What Type of Student Qualifies
A senior with at least a 3.7 GPA who is interested in graduate study in the UK and who plans a career as a leader and contributor to improving UK-US understanding. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. All majors are eligible.

Truman Scholarships
These awards provide a scholarship of $30,000 cumulative for two years of graduate school in a public service-related degree in preparation for careers in government, non-profit organizations, or public service. This award is for students that have already established a strong record of service and who possess leadership skills. Many fields of study are possible. Recipients must work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of the graduate degree. Additional experiences are available such as a summer institute in Washington, DC.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
A junior who is interested in a career in government, non-profit organizations, or public service who has a strong track record of service and leadership. Ideally, a student with a passion for at least one policy issue related to a domestic or international issue in US politics. All applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. All majors are eligible to apply.

Fulbright US Student Program
Fulbright grants fund year-long research or travel projects in international locations. The award covers travel costs, language or orientation expenses, medical insurance, and living expenses.
What Type of Student Qualifies
A senior who has studied or traveled extensively aboard and who has an interest in doing a research project abroad. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must hold a B.S./B.A. degree by the time of the award. All majors are eligible.

Davies-Jackson Scholarship
This award funds students to complete a two-year liberal arts B.A. degree at St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge in England. This award covers all fees, room, and board during two academic years of study at St. John’s College, Cambridge University and summer living expenses. Travel to and from England is also covered.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
A senior student who is a first generation college student and who is interested in the liberal arts. Applicants must be U.S. citizen, seniors (at the time of application), and first generation college student. All majors are eligible, but students must be interested in one of the following subjects:Archaeology and Anthropology, Classics, Economics, English, Geography, History, History of Art, Modern and Medieval Languages, Music, Philosophy, or Social and Political Sciences.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
This award offers students three years of support usable over a five-year period for graduation students in STEM graduate programs that are focused on research. For each year of support, NSF provides a stipend of $30,000 to the Fellow and a cost-of-education allowance of $12,000 to the degree-granting institution.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or national, or permanent resident. Applicants must be graduating seniors; have completed a B.S./B.A. degree in a STEM field; and be pursuing a research-based master’s or doctoral degree at an accredited US institution in the science, technology, engineering, or mathematics fields.

CORO Fellows Program in Public Affairs
This award is a full-time, nine-month, graduate level experiential learning experience that places student in several field placements over the course of nine months so that fellows can learn about how various institutions in a city work together. Many students leave CORO and go into MA programs in public policy, politics, and nonprofit work. If chosen for this prestigious award, you are required to pay the fee for the city’s program (between $3,500-$5,000 for the year) and you are not given any stipends for living expenses, so the awardees must be able to sustain their own living costs for nine months.
What Type of Student Qualifies
A senior who is interested in public policy, urban planning, or nonprofit administration. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and seniors (at the time of application).

Post-Graduate Experiences
Peace Corps
This award is a 27-month program that includes 10 weeks of in-country training and 24 months of volunteer service in an international country. All expenses are paid and some student loan debt forgiveness programs are available after volunteer service.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
A senior who is interested in international travel, volunteering, and an immersion experience that can lead into careers in international aid work, government, or nonprofit administration. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and seniors at the time of application.

Awards for Undergraduate Study
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships
Awardees get $7,500 per year to cover eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, room & board. Applicants receive funding for up to 2 years (current sophomores) or 1 year (current juniors). Students with promise to pursue careers in science, math, and engineering research are awarded funds to complete their junior and/or senior years of undergraduate studies.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
A junior or senior student who has plans to pursue a career in math, natural sciences, or engineering. Students who are pre-med are not eligible unless they plan a research career. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or Permanent Residents, science/math majors, and sophomores & juniors.

Morris K. Udall Scholarships
Scholarships of up to $5,000 for tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses awarded to students who have shown interest in the environment, tribal public policy, or Native health care. Additionally, this award funds a four-day summer orientation program.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
A sophomore or junior who is planning a career related to the environment or a Native American who is interested in tribal public policy or Native health care. Applicants must be U.S. citizen, U.S. nationals, or U.S. Permanent Residents, full-time sophomores or juniors (repeat applications OK), and GPA of B or better. All majors are eligible.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $4,000 to defray the cost of study abroad. The program encourages students to study in destinations outside of Western Europe and Australia.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
The program tries to support students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, such as students with high financial need, science and engineering students, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. Applicants must be US citizens, receiving a Federal Pell Grant, and must be studying abroad for at least four weeks in one country.

Boren Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $20,000 to defray the cost of study abroad. The program encourages students to study in destinations critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Study abroad programs to the countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
Applicants must be US citizens enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the US. Applicants must agree to work for at least one year in the Federal Government in a position with national security responsibilities.

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship
Scholarships of up to $50,000 for tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees for the senior year of undergraduate program and the first year of a graduate program or the first two years of graduate work.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
Applicants must be US citizens enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the US. Applicants must have a 3.2 GPA and they must commit to pursuing a graduate degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools participating in the program. Fellows must also participate in one domestic and one overseas summer internship and they are obligated to a minimum of three years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service Officer.

Freeman-Asia Award
Scholarships of up to $7,000 for undergraduate students to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia (Eligible countries include Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam). The program seeks to help more US students become knowledgeable about Asia. The award can be applied to the cost of airfare, tuition, room and board, local transportation, and books.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents who have received need-based financial aid and must be studying abroad for at least eight weeks in the same country to qualify. The award is often given to students who are also doing language study while abroad and who plan to incorporate Asian Studies into future academic or professional plans.

Critical Language Scholarship
This award cover a 7-10 week language study abroad program to a country where one of 13 languages critical to US interests is spoken, including languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese. The award covers travel from home city to program location, mandatory Washington DC pre-departure orientation, visa fees, room, board, group-based intensive language instruction, program-sponsored travel within country, all entrance fees for select cultural enhancement activities. US Passport fees are not covered by this program.
What Type of Student Qualifies?
Applicants must be US citizens, undergraduate students, and at least 18 years old. Each language program has different requirements, but most require at least one year of foreign language study before applying for this program.

Definitions of “terms”
“Campus Notice of Intent to Apply”
- Date by which students must have contacted the campus representative notifying him or her of their intent to submit an application.
- In order to fully assist students in the preparation of a strong application, and to conduct internal competitions, when necessary, students must notify the Maryville University faculty representative by this date of their intent to apply.
“Campus application deadline”
- Campus application deadlines are required for all awards that have a maximum allowed number of institutional nominations and/or require a letter of support from an administrator at the college.
- This deadline means that all materials must be completed for those scholarships with on-line applications (including letters of recommendation) and for those with paper submissions, all materials must be turned into the campus representative by this deadline.
